Lion Precision Provides Precision Sensors for ASPE Student Competition

St. Paul, Minn. USA, October 28, 2015

At the ASPE Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, students will compete to construct a 2-axis system  to scan the surface of a 2 mm square part. Lion Precision will provide five CPL230 Two-Channel Capacitive Displacement Sensors for the position sensing portion.

In the competition, teams of five “must draw upon their precision engineering skills to solve a multi-disciplinary challenge covering mechanical, electrical, metrology, and controls,” according to the contest announcement.

Students will be provided with mechanical components including motors, encoders, data acquisition systems, and the Lion Precision displacement sensors. Designs will be judged “on originality, best performance, presentation and implementation of precision engineering principles.” Winners will be announced after the keynote speaker on Nov. 2 and will demonstrate their design to the attendees. Each team member will also receive $1,000.

The CPL230 sensor system supports up to six channels of capacitive sensing with performance approaching that of the company’s top-of-the-line Elite Series modular systems. Resolutions as high as 0.0007% at 100 Hz or 0.004% at 15 kHz. It does all this in 4x2x8 inch package (100x50x200 mm). A differential output is provided for maximum performance when output connections must traverse longer distances through machines.

The CPL230 has color-coded channels and probes for easy installation into machines. With no user adjustments or displays, the electronics can be installed in out-of-the-way places. Systems typically ship with 15 kHz bandwidth. Users can access an internal dip-switch to set the bandwidth to 15 kHz, 10 kHz, 1 kHz, 100 Hz. The bandwidth selection allows users to opt for higher resolutions or higher speeds.

The system is easier on designer’s budgets at approximately 25% lower cost than the Elite Series systems.

Lion Precision introduced capacitive displacement sensors to industry in 1958. The company has expanded its product offering to include eddy-current displacement sensors and some application specific sensors for the machine tool, packaging and PCB industries. The company is built on assisting users with sensor selection and implementation by providing technical knowledge resources, expert guidance and optimized systems including custom designs. Lion Precision is well known for its application expertise and assistance in applying noncontact sensor technology.
